A veteran of the American Revolution, Richard Taylor had presented with General George Washington at White Plains, Trenton, Brandywine, and Monmouth. As Taylor developed, he supported in building up his dads developing estate, Springfield, into a sizable holding that included 10,000 sections of land and 26 slaves. In 1808, Taylor chose for leave the manor and had the option to get a commission as a first lieutenant in the US Army from his subsequent cousin, James Madison. The accessibility of the commission was because of an extension of the administration in the wake of theà Chesapeake-Leopardà Affair.à Assigned to the seventh US Infantry Regiment, Taylor voyaged south New Orleans where he served under Brigadier General James Wilkinson. War of 1812 Returning north to recuperate from malady, Taylor wedded Margaret Peggy Mackall Smith on June 21, 1810. As strains with the Shawnee head Tecumseh expanded, Taylors post turned into the get together point for General William Henry Harrisons armed force preceding the Battle of Tippecanoe.à As Harrisons armed force walked to manage Tecumseh, Taylor got arranges incidentally calling him to Washington, DC to affirm in a court-military including Wilkinson. Thus, he missed the battling and Harrisons triumph. Soon after the episode of the War of 1812, Harrison guided Taylor to assume responsibility for Fort Harrison close Terre Haute, IN. That September, Taylor and his little battalion were assaulted by Native Americans aligned with the British. Keeping up a vivacious barrier, Taylor had the option to hold during the Battle of Fort Harrison. The battling saw his battalion of around 50 men hold off roughly 600 Native Americans drove by Joseph Lenar and Stone Eater until being eased by a power drove by Colonel William Russell. Briefly elevated to major, Taylor drove an organization of the seventh Infantry during the crusade which finished at the Battle of Wild Cat Creek in late November 1812. Staying on the outskirts, Taylor quickly told Fort Johnson on the upper Mississippi River before being constrained to withdraw to Fort Cap au Gris. With the finish of the war in mid 1815, Taylor was diminished in rank back to commander. Irritated by this, he surrendered and came back to his dads estate. Outskirts Wars Perceived as a talented official, Taylor was offered a majors commission the next year and came back to the US Army. Proceeding to serve along the outskirts, he was elevated to lieutenant colonel in 1819. In 1822, Taylor was requested to build up another base west of Natchitoches, Louisiana. Giving order to Brigadier General Walker Keith Armistead, Taylor came back to Louisiana to supervise American powers in the southwest. He was in this job as pressures expanded with Mexico following the confirmation of the Republic of Texas into the United States. War Approaches In the wake of Congress consenting to concede Texas, the circumstance with Mexico quickly crumbled as the two nations contended over the area of the fringe. While the United States (and Texas already) asserted the Rio Grande, Mexico accepted the fringe to be found further north along the Nueces River. With an end goal to authorize the American guarantee and safeguard Texas, President James K. Polk guided Taylor to bring a power into the contested domain in April 1845. Moving his Army of Occupation to Corpus Christi, Taylor set up a base before progressing into the contested domain in March 1846. Building a gracefully stop at Point Isabel, he moved soldiers inland and manufactured a fortress on the Rio Grande known as Fort Texas inverse from the Mexican town of Matamoros. On April 25, 1846, a gathering of US dragoons, under Captain Seth Thornton, was assaulted by a huge power of Mexicans north of the Rio Grande. Cautioning Polk that threats had started, Taylor before long discovered that General Mariano Aristas cannons was assaulting Fort Texas. Battling Begins Activating the military, Taylor started moving south from Point Isabel to diminish Fort Texas on May 7. With an end goal to remove the stronghold, Arista crossed the stream with 3,400 men and expected a protective situation along the street from Point Isabel to Fort Texas. Experiencing the foe on May 8, Taylor assaulted the Mexicans at the Battle of Palo Alto. Through the magnificent utilization of mounted guns, the Americans constrained the Mexicans to withdraw. Falling back, Arista set up another situation at Resaca de la Palma the following day. Progressing not far off, Taylor again assaulted and again crushed Arista at the Battle of Resaca de la Palma. Pushing on, Taylor soothed Fort Texas and on May 18 cross the Rio Grande to involve Matamoros. On to Monterrey Coming up short on the powers to drive further into Mexico, Taylor chose for respite to anticipate fortifications. With the Mexican-American War going full speed ahead, extra soldiers before long arrived at his military. Building his power through the mid year, Taylor started a development against Monterrey in August. Presently a significant general, he built up a progression of armies along the Rio Grande as the main part of the military moved south from Camargo. Showing up north of the city on September 19, Taylor was gone up against by Mexican barriers drove by Lieutenant General Pedro de Ampudia. Initiating the Battle of Monterrey on September 21, he constrained Ampudia to give up the city subsequent to removing its flexibly lines south to Saltillo. After the fight, Taylor earned Polks fury by consenting to an eight-week truce with Ampudia. This was to a great extent persuaded by the high number of setbacks continued in taking the city and the reality he was somewhere down in hos tile area. Governmental issues at Play Coordinated to end the peace negotiation, Taylor got requests to push forward to Saltillo. As Taylor, whose political arrangement was obscure, had become a national legend, Polk, a Democrat, got worried about the officers political aspirations. Subsequently, he requested Taylor to stand quick in northeastern Mexico while requesting Major General Winfield Scott to assault Veracruz before progressing on Mexico City. To help Scotts activity, Taylors armed force was deprived of the heft of its powers. Discovering that Taylors order had been diminished, General Antonio Lã ³pez de Santa Anna walked north with 22,000 men with the objective of squashing the Americans. Assaulting at the Battle of Buena Vista on February 23, 1847, Santa Annas men were repelled with substantial misfortunes. Mounting a determined protection, Taylors 4,759 men had the option to hold however they were severely extended. The triumph at Buena Vista further improved Taylors national notoriety and denoted the last battling he would see during the contention. Known as Old Rough Ready for his abrupt disposition and honest clothing, Taylor had to a great extent stayed quiet on his political convictions. Leaving his military in November 1947, he gave order to Brigadier General John Wool. President Coming back to the United States, he adjusted himself to the Whigs however he was not in full help of their foundation. Designated for president at the 1848 Whig show, Millard Fillmore of New York was chosen as his running mate. Effectively crushing Lewis Cass in the 1848 political race, Taylor was confirmed as President of the United States on March 4, 1849. In spite of the fact that a slaveholder, he took a moderate position regarding the matter and didn't accept that the establishment could effectively be traded to the recently gained lands from Mexico. Taylor additionally upheld for California and New Mexico to quickly apply for statehood and sidestep regional status. The issue of subjection came to rule his term in office and the Compromise of 1850 was being discussed when Taylor unexpectedly kicked the bucket on July 9, 1850. The Stories of Antonia - Literature Essay Samples
According to Walter Benjaminââ¬â¢s ââ¬Å"The Storyteller,â⬠storytellers are a dying breed, and the novel only contributes to the death of storytelling. If that is true, then Willa Catherââ¬â¢s My Antonia is a fan fueling flames on the somber coals of storytelling. Cather uses various instances of narrative that mirror oral storytelling. These instances attempt to ââ¬Å"keep [the] story free from explanationâ⬠and leave the reader to ââ¬Å"interpret things the way he understands themâ⬠(Benjamin 89). When Jim Burden kills the large snake in the prairie-dog town, the major source of pride for him is not just personal satisfaction. His contentment stems from the ability to show off his kill, the ability to tell that story. As a storyteller, he takes pride in his narrative, and enjoys the ability of his tale to inspire admiration in his listeners. Antonia is a witness to his account, and ââ¬Å"Her exultation was contagiousâ⬠(Cather 33) for Jim. That is because he is receiving contentment and pleasure from sharing his narrative. Antonia then also receives satisfaction from standing ââ¬Å"in the middle of the floor, telling the story with a great deal of colourâ⬠(Cather 34). The story continues to pass on; instead of discarding the snake after the kill, they drag it home, and then leave it hanging up on the fence so that all the neighbors can witness their story. This shows Jimââ¬â¢s innate desire to receive and give ââ¬Å"the most extraordinary things, marvelous things, [that] are not forced on the [listener]â⬠(Benjamin 89). The next instance of oral storytelling jumps out of Jim and Antoniaââ¬â¢s visit to Pavel on his deathbed. Pavelââ¬â¢s story is first heard by Mr. Shimerda and Antoniaââ¬â¢s ears, and then related to Jim by Antonia. That furthering of the story gives pleasure to all parties. Pavel relieves himself of the story as a deathbed confession. The narrative echoes in Jim and Anton iaââ¬â¢s mind throughout the novel, although they choose not to share the story. Pavelââ¬â¢s deathbed admission gives Jimmy and Antonia ââ¬Å"a painful and peculiar pleasureâ⬠that they ââ¬Å"guardedâ⬠¦jealouslyâ⬠(Cather 41). Jim and Antonia seem to understand that the story in itself is ââ¬Å"the securest among [humanityââ¬â¢s] possessionsâ⬠(Benjamin 83). To Jim and Antonia, this story gives them access to a foreign hidden land. Jim spends his night imagining himself in that sledge of Pavelââ¬â¢s story, with the setting ââ¬Å"look[ing] something like Nebraska and something like Virginiaâ⬠(Cather 41). The mixed setting reflects how the move and loss of parents displaced Jim. The death of Mr. Shimerda causes the spurring of various short oral tales from other characters in the novel. Jelinekââ¬â¢s story about his time as an altar boy during a cholera break helps the Shimerdas relate to another culture. Jimmy admits that they ââ¬Å "had listened attentively. It was impossible not to admire his frank, manly faithâ⬠(Cather 70). This outpouring of an oral tale not only helps the characters to relate to one another and connect, but also causes the Burdens to connect to another culture. Otto tells the Burdens how he learned to make a coffin, a story that also elicits a reaction from the listeners. The passing of all these stories through the community strengthens them; ââ¬Å"It is left up to [them] to interpret things the way [they] understand themâ⬠(Benjamin 89). It causes the other characters to react, to think. Mr. Shimerdaââ¬â¢s death continues his stories as well, as Antonia passes them on to Jimmy. She does not want her father to be forgotten, and the passing of these stories gives her that satisfaction. When Jim does his commencement speech Antonia wishes that her father could have heard it, and Jim states, ââ¬Å"I thought about your papa when I wrote my speech, TonyI dedicated it to himâ⬠(Cather 147). Antonia tells more of Mr. Shimerdaââ¬â¢s stories when they all go swimming at the river. It was ââ¬Å"beautiful talk, like what I never hear in this countryâ⬠(Cather 150). The tradition, the story of Mr. Shimerda continues. Oral stories also create connections between the characters within the novel. During Jimââ¬â¢s first winter in Nebraska, Otto and Jake sit and tell stories about animals and outlaws. These oral tales provide not only entertainment on the individual level, but as a group, these stories created a bond between the listeners and the speaker. Ottoââ¬â¢s story of his arrival in America ââ¬Å"makes it the experience of those listening to the taleâ⬠(Benjamin 87). The stories serve to bring the family together, and to forge connections within the family. When Antonia works for the Harlings, Nina Harling begs Antonia to tell them stories. ââ¬Å"Everything she said seemed to come right out of her heartâ⬠(Cat her 113), says Jim. Her oral stories bring the children together. The anecdote of the trampââ¬â¢s suicide also elicits reactions from the characters. They take pleasure in their connections with Antonia through her stories. The oral story echoes in Jim and serves a more fulfilling purpose than that of the novels in Jimââ¬â¢s life. My Antonia begins with Jim reading Life of Jesse James. He uses the novel and books to hide from reality, rather than to identify and relate to his surroundings. When Jim meets Otto Fuchs, he places him as a character in Jesse James, but in Pavelââ¬â¢s oral story Jim identifies with Pavel and Russian Peter; he imagines himself in that sledge, running from those wolves. His own story of the snake gives him a sense of himself, and the reflections from telling the story to others fulfill him. The novels Jimmy reads in My Antonia never give him the connection oral storytelling does. They never resonate with him, and often give him just a pl ace to hide from his surroundings, rather than to connect with them. When Jim promises his grandmother not to attend dances at the Firemanââ¬â¢s Hall, he turns to his schoolbooks to help sever his ties with the community. Books serve to isolate Jim, and he uses them in order to distinguish himself from negative oral traditions. A major moment in which Jim defines himself within the community is his commencement speech. Mrs. Harling states, ââ¬Å"You didnââ¬â¢t get that speech out of booksâ⬠(Cather 146), showing that for Jim his true connection with people is not through books, but through stories. Gossip as a form of oral storytelling also has a major effect on the community. Gossip is used mostly to negative effect, yet is the townââ¬â¢s most significant form of oral storytelling. One example of gossipââ¬â¢s effect on the characters and community is the way in which it shapes peoples understanding of Lena Linguard. Another is the way the ââ¬Å"hired girls â⬠are thought of once they begin attending the tent dances. When Jim meets up with them in the ice cream shop and the high-school principal comes in, they have to stop their laughter: Anna knew the whisper was going about that I was a sly one. People said there must be something queer about a boy who showed no interest in girls of his own age, but who could be lively enough when he was with Tony and Lena or the three Marys. (Cather 138)The effect of gossip on the communityââ¬â¢s opinion of the subjects hits the youth. For the first time, Jim becomes the subject of negative oral stories. When one person, the principal in this instance, overhears something in a negative context, the subject of the gossip, Jim, becomes part of a story that will reverberate throughout the community. Jim also finds himself told by Jelinek to leave his bar because of what ââ¬Å"church people think about saloonsâ⬠(Cather 139). Because of gossip, Jim has to stop attending the dances at the Firemenââ¬â¢s Hall. ââ¬Å"People say you are growing up to be a bad boy, and that ainââ¬â¢t just to usâ⬠(Cather 145), Grandmother tells Jim. My Antonia in itself is a composition of a novelist trying to recreate a novelist trying to capture the connections provided by oral storytelling. Jim attempts to reconnect with the oral storytelling of his youth by recalling and writing his accounts with Antonia. However, according to Benjamin, he is only furthering his state: The novelist has isolated himself. The birthplace of the novel is the solitary individual, who is no longer able to express himself by giving examples of his most important concerns, is himself uncounseled, and cannot counsel others. (Benjamin 87)Jim fits this profile of the novelist perfectly. Jim is grasping at the connection he once had with a community of his youth. However, as readers, we understand that Jim never really gets back those times. He lacks children to orally tell his stories to, and the only way he can attempt to relate these tales is by writing them down. Jimââ¬â¢s novel is an attempt to connect again, but this attempt only makes his situation worse. Catherââ¬â¢s point of making Jim the novelist struggling for a connection serves to reverse the belief that novels do not connect with readers. Her use of oral storytelling throughout My Antonia gives the reader of the modern novel a glimpse of our ââ¬Å"wish to hear a storyâ⬠(Benjamin 83). At times, My Antonia has almost a stream-of-consciousness feeling, emulating the processes of a story that is told orally. Some instances in the novel not only validate the importance of the oral storyteller, but also recreate that sense that information alone fails to give us. Willa Catherââ¬â¢s My Antonia proves that novels can create the essence of the oral story and conveys to readers the importance of oral storytelling. In ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum Estâ⬠Owen talks about his experience in World War 1, taking the reader inside the actual event and giving them the insight on his feelings watching his fellow troops die. In Facing It by Yusef Komunyakaa and Wilfred Owen s ââ¬Å"Dulce et Decorum Est, the poets use various literary techniques to express their traumatic experiences of war. Without these literary devices, the poems would not be as powerful and effective in expressing how war mentally damaged them. T he first literary technique they use is symbolism. Standing in front of the Vietnam memorial, Yuself Komunyaka looked back at a terrorizing time in his life. Looking down the list of etched names on the black granite wall Komunyaka reflect on his experience and confronts his conflicting feelings about war. As he stares at the wall he begins to have flash back of the war. The rushing of his flash back symbolizes the rush in war, everything happing so fast (Schatzie2013). Concept of Organizational Changes â⬠MyAssignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about the Concept of Organizational Changes. Answer: Introduction Organizational change managementhighlights on the framework that involves in managing the new changes in the culture and structure of the organization. This study deals with the impact of the organizational changes on the contemporary organizations and the potential factors for which thechange management program fails within the organization. Concept of organizational changes Organizational changes refer to the changes in the existing strategy, technologies, structure, culture and the operational method. However, changes can be taken place through a continuous process or for the distinct period of time. According to the failure induced change theory, an organization incorporates new strategy in their existing system while they fail to fulfill their business objectives. Programs, routine and the standard procedures are considered as the base of a stable organization. However, if such standards are changed then organizational changes take place (Mees, McMurray, Chhetri, 2016). According to the dynamic capabilities model, standard process and routine facilitate the organizational change. In order to enhance the productivity and achieve the competitive advantages, the old strategies and the operation process need to be updated. On the other hand, in order to develop the skills of the employees and for the fast operation technological changes are required within such organization (Voet Vermeeren, 2017). Importance of the organizational changes in context of contemporary organizations Issues related to workforce management, talent management and the establishment of communication often occur in the contemporary organization as the contemporary organization includes matrix structure, various teams, project structure and so on. In order to manage the workforce and establishment of the better communication in matrix structure changes are necessary for the contemporary organizations. However, proper training should be provided to the employees in order to develop their technical skills as the incorporation of modern technology is crucial in the traditional operating system to maximize the productivity(Mills, 2017). Implementation of different languages within the working culture will enable the organizations to develop their communication process in the matrix structure, which empowers the employees in the decision making. This will lead the organization to engulf the growth opportunity by developing the good relationship with their employees. Changes allow the organizations to achieve the competitive advantages by minimizing their struggle and leading the organization to the progress. Customer satisfaction is another opportunity for the organization that can be achieved through implementing changes as the use of advanced technology enables the consumers to make the direct connection with the organization through internet, this is crucial to express their feedbacks and needs regarding the product or service of an organization (Burke, 2017). Identifications of the reasons for which the change programs are failed within the organization Organizational changes are failed sometimes or remain under achieve as different factors influence negatively thechange management program. Poor planning that affects the success of the implemented changes based on the organizational goal. However, if there is poor communication between the stakeholders then their decision making regarding the changes is affected. Next due to lack of clear performance, focus and skills the implemented changes are destroyed as a result the organization are affected (Creasey, Jamieson, Severini, 2016). As for example, Steven Sasson the Kodak engineer introduced first digital camera in the year 1975. However, when the company started to incorporate digital strategy in their business it was too late as a result in the year 2000 this strategy was completely failed and the company was affected badly (Sultan Bunt-Kokhuis, 2012). Kodak did not innovate the marketing and design strategy despite they had used innovation pyramid framework, which led them towards the disruption. Hence it can be said that there was the lack of proper planning while implementing the changes, as a result, the changes are failed to get success in the context of Kodak. Discussion of the other reasons for the failure of change management Inadequate leadership, inappropriate changing criteria, and winning strategy are the other vital reasons of the failure of changemanagement within an organization. However, if the organization succeed through their strategy then over confidence grows, which affects the success of change management as the organization is distracted from their goal. On the other hand, inadequate leadership and poor changing criteria hamper the implementation of change management as it develops an unclear vision regarding the changes to the stakeholders. As for example, unfreeze, movement and refreeze are the three steps of change management. Hence, British Airway faced the issue in the unfreeze stage as it started a long cost cutting process without identifying the issues that caused huge employee turnover. However, the vision regarding such changes was not clear and the leadership was inadequate as they failed to motivate the employees. As a result, the employees left the organization and the change m anagement strategy was failed (Mills, 2017). Conclusion The entire study focuses on the different aspects of change management and its advantages and reasons of failure with proper case studies. It can be concluded that if the goal of the organization is not clear regarding a change in the existing system then it will be difficult for the organization to achieve success. References Burke. Global Citizenship Essay Topics
Global Citizenship Essay TopicsGlobal citizenship essay topics are often the subject of debate among graduate students. The debates have to do with what the global citizen should know and how much he or she should know about various global issues. One must ask whether the person is a global citizen or not. In that case, are they able to do what the world needs or not? This could very well be the subject of a dissertation in which the research is done in accordance with the Graduate Program advisor's decision.A global citizen must know about the two types of world citizens. They are the subjects of globalization as well as the subjects of integration. For example, it would mean that the global citizen would know about international law. If we consider the entire globe, this global citizen will also know about various other aspects like culture, politics, economics, history, and so on.Globalization has become an important part of the world's economic development and should also be consi dered by the global citizen. It is because globalization has allowed many people from other countries to start their own businesses. This allows them to survive in foreign countries while at the same time opening new horizons for their country. People from other countries are able to utilize this because they know how to negotiate.Integration can be considered as a way of life in which a person should be a global citizen in every respect. This includes knowing about different religions, countries, cultures, and so on. It is important to understand that people from all over the world share the same culture, similar religions, and even the same history.A curriculum in this course is meant to prepare one for a fine-art education career. One would have to be a world citizen with a liberal interest. One can study history, languages, and soon. Then a student can write a thesis on the subject and present it to his advisor for evaluation. This may seem quite contradictory, but the point is t hat a global citizen should learn about the two types of global citizens and how it can help him or her in the world of academia. Or, perhaps, one can simply think of a global citizen as someone who has been exposed to the idea of globalization.
